Neck Pain Q&A

What is neck pain?

Neck pain can feel different from one person to the next. For some, neck pain is a persistent dull ache. For others, the pain feels more like a sharp twinge that comes and goes. In some cases, neck pain radiates to other parts of the body, for example, pain in the neck may shoot down the arm or back in some cases. Neck pain may be accompanied by other symptoms, such as range of motion problems in the head and neck. Some people may also experience numbness or a "pins and needles" feeling in their neck along with neck pain.

Who suffers from neck pain?

Neck pain can happen in people of any age but is most common in adults. People who have a very sedentary lifestyle and people who sit for very long periods may be more likely to develop neck pain. People who have high stress levels and people who suffer from migraine headaches may often experience neck pain as well. One of the most common causes of neck pain is whiplash. Whiplash occurs during collisions, particularly during auto accidents. When the collision happens, the neck is forced to briefly detach from the spine before it settles back into place. The neck often settles back into an improper state of alignment, which in turn causes serious neck pain.

What is the chiropractic approach to neck pain?

Dr. Hui has found that most neck pain sufferers benefit from a combination approach to pain relief. Specialized cervical spine manipulations can move the neck into proper position, which will alleviate much of the pain. Additionally, electrical stimulation therapy can deliver targeted pain relief while it decreases the inflammation in surrounding muscles. After treatment, neck pain sufferers will be able to move normally again, since pain is often the reason for range of motion issues.
